There are many ways to tie a belt for martial arts. The video to your right is the way in which I teach it in our olympic style taekwondo program. Please check with your instructor before using this video to learn from as your school or program may teach a different way.
In our program we use what are called double rap belts. These are belts that rap 2 times around your waist before getting tied in the front.
Some schools want your stripes on the left and some on the right. Some like the knot to be open to the left and some teach it open to the right.
What is important is that you tie the belt in the way your school would like it done in order to conform with those in your class. In martial arts, what sets us apart from each other is our skill level and what we stand for, not how we look in a cool uniform or with a belt tied differently than everyone else. This is one of the reasons everyone wears the same uniform in the same color.
